DOWN ON THE FARM REPORT: INJURIES

Future Big Leaguers on the Disable List

After two 1st round draft picks of the Chicago White Sox go down with season ending injuries the McCabe Magazine decided to take a look at future stars placed on the 60-Day Disable List.


Clarence Finley
Arizona

Clarence Finley was the number 1 overall pick in season 10 out of Vancouver, Canada. This 6’5 double-A can’t miss Center Fielder went down on 2/7PM2 with a bulging disk in his lower back. He was placed on the 60-Day Disable List. The injury occurred during the 16th game of spring training. Finley was having an incredible spring training and was making a strong bid of becoming the opening day starter in center field. He played in 14 spring training games batting a whopping 348 in 48 at-bats with 3 Home Runs and 18 RBI. This is Finley’s second stint on the DL with a back injury. In season 11 he was placed on the 7-Day DL with a back strain. Finley has received the following minor league awards; 3 Silver Slugger (CF), 2 MVP, 2 All-Star, 1 ROY, and 1 Gold Glove (CF). Look for this D-Back to be on the Big League roster in the very near future.

Like Finley, Christy Tapani (P) was a 1st round draft (28) pick in season 10. Tapani expected to be on the season 15 opening day Big League roster when he went down early in season 14 with a season ending elbow injury that required surgery. At the time on the injury Tapani had an ERA of 0.84 in 10.2 innings of work at the AAA level. The medical staff indicated that the projected closer will be out about 234 days and should be ready to resume throwing at the start of season 15 spring training.

Tony Lowry (LF) was the first pick of the kgrffth era in Chicago. “He was the cornerstone of the organization” kgrffth told McCabe magazine. Lowry was the 10th pick in season 13 amateur draft, kgrffth first season as CEO/President of the White Sox. That season Lowry made the Rookie League All-Star team batting 371 with 13 HR, 56 RBI, 33 stolen bases, 2 CS, and scored 125 runs. He was promoted to AA during season 14 spring training and got off to a hot start, batting 341 with 7 homers, and 24 stolen bases in 46 games before tearing his hamstring and ending his season, out 207 days.

Chet Mays (P) was a 1 round supplemental (43) pick out of Burke, SD High School in season 11. In 80 minor league starts Mays is 45-18 with 6 complete games and an ERA of 3.41. This 6’2 203 lbs left-hander is out 347 days with a Shoulder/Aneurysm injury. This is his second trip on the DL. Mays was placed on the 7-day list in season 11 with a bulging neck disk. Minor League Awards: Season 11 Rookie All-Star team, and Season 13 All-Star team.

Rod Kapler is a New York born second-basemen drafted (season 11) in the 2nd round out of Georgia Southern University by his hometown team, the New York Metropolitans. He has spent his entire minor league career in High-A, this being his 4th. Kapler was quoted in an Yahoo Sports.com interview saying "if I'm not in AAA by season 15, I'm out of here." Career minor league totals: 310 BA, 254 Runs, and 118 stolen bases. Kapler was placed on the 60-day disable list on 2/13 PM with an ankle bone bruise.
