CARDINALS WIN WORLD SERIES

PADRES AVOID SWEEP BUT LOSE IN 5 


San Diego, Ca. (McC) That pop you heard was the knockout punch St. Louis landed on the chin of the San Diego Padres the defending World Series Champions, 4 games to 1. San Diego enter the series with a post season record of 10-1 and looked like a team ready to repeat. They never got on track. Season 14 CO-MVP Tony Cortes led an assault on the NL champions pitching staff that saw St. Louis outscore San Diego 37-13 in the 5 game series. This was the Cardinals 4th appearance in the World Series. St. Louis was 0-3 in the Fall Classic prior to season 14.

Game 1 St. Louis Cardinals 8 San Diego Padres 0

St. Louis, Mo. (McC) Asdrubal Pelaez gave up 3 runs on 3 hits in the 1st inning and the Cardinals never looked back as they cruised to a 8-0 shutout win over the San Diego Padres. Edgardo Villa pitched 8 shutout innings striking out 6 and walking 1 to pickup the win.

Player of the Game: Louis Choate 2 solo homers.

Game 2 St. Louis Cardinals 15 San Diego Padres 2

St. Louis, Mo. (McC) Tony Cortes led a 14 hit, 15 run attack, and St. Louis took a 2-0 lead in its quest to dethrone the season 13 champions. Cy Young candidate Alvin Dodd (2-1, 2.22 ERA) went 7 innings giving up 3 hits and striking out 6 to get the victory. St. Louis scored 10 runs in the first four innings and the rout was on.

Player of the Game: Tony Cortes drives in 4 runs.

Game 3 St. Louis Cardinals 5 San Diego Padres 1  

San Diego, Ca. (McC) With 2 outs in the top of the 5th inning Lorenzo Alvarado crushed a 2-run homer to left-center that gave the Cards a 4-0 lead and a 3 games 0 lead in the World Series. The win sent Cardinal fans to the kitchen looking for the broom. J.P. Johnson (2-1, 2.66 ERA) gave up 1 run over 7.2 innings of work and the San Diego pitching staff continued to look like they were throwing batting practice.

Player of the Game: Lorenzo Alvarado drives in 3 runs

Game 4 San Diego Padres 4 St. Louis Cardinals 1

San Diego, Ca. (McC) Asdrubal Pelaez (SP), Emil Aquino (RP), and Eddie Barber (CIA) combined to limit St. Louis to 1 run on 4 hits and the Padres picked up their first win of the series. Pelaez improved his post season record to 3-1 with an 2.55 ERA. Barber collected his 7th save of the post season with an 2.70 ERA. Padre 1st basemen Harry McNichol had a run scoring single in the 1st and a 2-run homer in the 8th that sealed the victory.

Game 5 St. Louis Cardinals 8 San Diego Padres 6

San Diego, Ca. (McC) The Cardinals were up 5-0 in the 5th inning when Padre leadoff man Timothy Osik hit a grand slam to draw San Diego within a run. St. Louis extended their lead in the 7th when Albert Nieves hit a double to left-center scoring Tony Cortes who had walked and stole second. San Diego scored 2 runs in the bottom of the 9th when Timothy Osik flew out to right-center with runners on 1st and 2nd to end the game and the series. St. Louis Cardinals are season 14 World Series Champions 4-1.
